Why Resilience Matters in Franchising

Franchise | March 2025

Resilience: (noun) defined as ‘the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.’

Resilience is perhaps one of the most important characteristics for a franchisee to have. Having the ability to recover from roadblocks that present themselves could be the difference between surviving as a franchise owner and simply crumbling under the pressure. When you are resilient, you persevere through even the most difficult of situations, keeping your eye on the prize regardless of what happens along the way.

Franchise Direct states it may be the most important thing to have during the first 12 months of franchise ownership. While we agree, the first year of franchise ownership may be one of the most challenging, we also think it’s important to have resilience throughout your franchising career for a number of reasons.

Here are a few important ways this one characteristic can truly make a difference in the success of a business owner.

Franchising has the ability to be one of the most exciting times in your life, but it can potentially also be filled with new adventures that can be extremely scary or intimidating. When you have a drive or passion for your business that pushes you forward, you are relying on resilience to keep you moving through the challenges that you may face as a business owner.

No one says this adventure is going to be free of hard days and long hours, but it’s how you approach those challenges that set you apart from others who will crumble under the pressure! Being resilient means rising above the hard times and using your passion for what you do to propel you, your team and your business forward. It’s more than just barely getting through tough times, being resilient means that you roll up your sleeves and get to work, day in and day out, regardless of how hard that particular day may be.

Speaking of rolling up your sleeves and getting to work, franchising is built on the sole belief that there has to be trust between the franchisee and the franchisor in the relationship. Without trust, there’s absolutely no room for success. Your business has to be built on a solid foundation.

So, what does this have to do with resilience you may ask? Well, it’s important to remember that you bought into the particular franchise network of your choosing because you believed in the product and the business model. Having the mental toughness to go deep in the trenches and put in the work day after day shows that you wholeheartedly trust your franchisor’s business model and that you believe this hard work will be worth it. Just as those who have come before you in your franchise network, you have to put in the work to reap the rewards. Sure, being business savvy and driven may get your foot in the door, but resiliency and trust will propel you forward towards success.

Perhaps one of the best parts of being a franchise owner is that there’s truly never a dull moment. Every single day you have the opportunity to learn, grow and persevere as a business owner. It’s important to remember that the days may be long, your weeks may seem chaotic and months may be gone in a blink of an eye, but one thing should remain constant: your push towards being the best of the best. Whether it’s through perfecting your management style with your employees, finding the best way to market to your local community or simply quality checking your services, it’s important to remember to learn and grow from your experiences. Resiliency and humility go hand and hand, and without one, the other could completely collapse. We encourage franchise owners to continue learning, day in and day out, and to remember they are never too good to learn new skills.

Franchise Direct says it perfectly:

“As a resilient franchisee, the end of the first year will unveil a smarter and highly capable owner. And while life may continue to throw unfair punches, you’ll move on confidently, knowing your abilities and following a proven brand. All of that is worth a celebration.”

As we stated earlier, owning your own business and becoming a franchise owner is one of the most exhilarating and rewarding things you can do in life. It may not be without its challenges or temporary setbacks, but we truly believe that with perseverance and resilience, franchise success is possible. By pushing yourself forward, you are setting yourself apart from the competition that may crumble under the slightest bit of pressure. As a resilient franchisee, you are not one to back down and you will arise to any challenge thrown your way.
